What do calendar days mean?

Calendar days are consecutive dates. Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays all count. If a notice says “within 10 calendar days,” count every date unless the controlling document gives a different definition.

What do business days mean?

Business days normally mean Monday through Friday. Public holidays may also be excluded when the contract, policy or jurisdiction requires it. The applicable definition always takes priority.

Calendar days

A calendar-day count includes weekdays, weekends, and public holidays. Seven calendar days always span one full week.

Business days

A business-day count normally includes Monday through Friday and may exclude public holidays for the selected jurisdiction.

Example: ten days

Ten calendar days are always ten consecutive dates. Ten business days usually span 14 calendar days before regional public holidays are considered.

Start-date rules matter

Some instructions count the starting day as day one; others begin on the following eligible business day. Use the Include start date option to match the rule.

Read the actual wording

Contracts and regulations may define “business day” differently. Always use the definition in the controlling document for important deadlines.
